Tips for buying Shire horses (and horses in general)

  • Buy Shire horses with full breeding documentation and only from reputable breeders.
  • Firstly, please take ample time to create the optimum conditions for housing and accommodating these creatures and ensure you consider that Shire Horses are so called ‘late bloomers’ meaning that it takes 6 years until they are fully mature.
  • Schooling or riding training before the 4th or 5th year is not recommended.
  • “Buy one - get one free” might sound swanky and cool when acquiring state of the art electronics, but generally does not bode well when buying live animals. Respectable breeders operate in sensible stabling conditions which run with appropriate and applicable operating costs.
  • Low-priced animals typically means ‘short-comings’ and you will undoubtedly pay doubly in the form of veterinary fees.
  • Do not buy animals with a clear deficiency or very emaciated horses. Rather invest your money in a pre-purchase vet appraisal than into legal proceedings for having to return a horse.
