General suggestions with regard to the purchase
- Only ever buy Shire horses that come with documents from respectable breeders. You can find them by referring to Deutsche Shire Horse Verein (DSHV; German Shire Horse Association). This is also where you can find all the information on keeping Shire horses and your questions regarding the animals will be answered.
- Make sure you meet all the prerequisites for an ideal environment in which the animals are kept and also consider that Shire horses are known as “late developers”, which means they are not fully grown until they are aged 6 years or over.
- We do not recommend they undergo training before they are aged 4 or 5 years.
- While being thrifty might be appropriate when it comes to buying an LCD TV, it usually does not work out when it comes to buying animals. Respectable breeders offer adequate conditions in which the animals are kept so that costs are entailed.
- The price you have to pay for inexpensive animals that are impaired with regard to their physical development will usually double due to the veterinarian’s bills.
- Do not buy animals that have inescapable flaws or that are malnourished.
- You should rather invest money in an examination that is carried out on the animal prior to its purchase than spend money on a law suit that can result from returning the horse.
